UNC–Chapel Hill’s historic campus, with its uneven brick paths and constant construction, poses daily navigation challenges for students with mobility limitations.
To address this, Tar Heels at the Table, an accessibility advocacy group, partnered with App Team Carolina to create Luminary, a mobile app that crowdsources real-time accessibility information and offers personalized, accessible routes across campus.
As Luminary’s UI/UX Designer, I guided a multidisciplinary team, designing an inclusive tool that empowers users, promotes shared responsibility for accessibility, and helps make UNC a more navigable and equitable place for everyone.

Luminary could transform life at UNC–Chapel Hill by making campus navigation accessible for everyone, regardless of mobility needs.
Through crowdsourced, real-time accessibility data, it removes the trial-and-error often faced by people with disabilities and fosters a culture of shared responsibility for inclusion.
The insights gathered can help the university identify and address persistent barriers, guiding long-term infrastructure improvements. As adoption grows, Luminary can empower greater independence, enhance participation, and position UNC as a leader in accessible campus design.
